Advanced Portuguese: Spoken Fluency and Sociolinguistic Awareness
At advanced level, the remaining gaps are rarely grammatical. They tend to be sociolinguistic - knowing not just what to say, but which variant to use, in which context, and why a native speaker would choose differently.
What distinguishes this course
The curriculum draws on authentic spoken data: interviews, podcasts, regional radio broadcasts, and informal conversation recordings from Portugal, Brazil, Angola, and Mozambique. You study real variation, not a sanitised standard.
Phonological analysis is a component here. You learn to identify and produce features of Carioca speech, Lisbon urban vernacular, and formal broadcast Portuguese - not to imitate them, but to understand what you are hearing and respond appropriately.
Spoken production under analysis
You record yourself weekly. A tutor listens and provides structured feedback on fluency markers, hesitation patterns, register consistency, and phonological accuracy. This is not pronunciation correction in the beginner sense - it is discourse-level analysis.
Participants also write a short sociolinguistic commentary each fortnight, examining a feature of Portuguese variation using the course readings as reference.
Prerequisites
This course requires solid command of all major tenses including the subjunctive, comfortable reading of authentic texts, and the ability to speak for several minutes without preparation on a familiar topic.
If you are uncertain whether your level qualifies, a short placement task is available before enrolment. The course does not suit learners still consolidating intermediate grammar.
Recordings submitted for feedback are stored securely and deleted at course end unless you request otherwise.Programme Structure
