Intermediate Portuguese: Grammar Depth and Written Expression
There is a particular frustration that intermediate learners know well: you can communicate, but your sentences feel clumsy. You avoid the subjunctive because you are not sure when it applies. You write in the present tense because the past feels unstable.
The focus of this course
This programme targets that intermediate plateau. It does not re-teach basics. It assumes you know the present and simple past tenses, basic noun-adjective agreement, and can construct a simple sentence without prompting.
The course works through the subjunctive mood systematically - present, imperfect, and future subjunctive - with written exercises that require you to choose the correct form and explain why. That reasoning step is deliberate.
Reading as a grammar tool
Each module includes two short texts: one from a Portuguese newspaper, one from a Brazilian literary source. You analyse sentence structure, identify grammatical features, and rewrite selected passages in a different register.
This is not reading comprehension in the school-exercise sense. It is close reading with a grammatical lens.
Workload and expectations
Expect 7 to 9 hours per week. Assignments are due weekly and are graded with written comments. There are no multiple-choice tests - all assessment is written production.
The course runs over 10 weeks. Students who complete all assignments typically develop noticeably more confident written output, though the degree varies by prior exposure and practice habits.
All texts used are cleared for educational use. A reference grammar PDF is included with enrolment.Programme Structure
